LO1 - Research Notes

Area of research:
Notes:  Coldplay-Clocks (Unlike Pluto remix)
Purpose – What is the purpose of this audio product? Does it entertain, inform, instruct? How do you know it is for this purpose?
This is supposed to entertain an audience by giving them music to get absorbed into or to play at a club as it is fairly new-wave
Form & Style – What form does the product take (podcast, audiobook, audio manual etc. What style is employed? Conversational, formal, informal etc.
This comes under the music category of house remix
Content -  What is in this audio product, what does it deliver to its audience.
This delivers an alternative version to a song that already exists they Taylor it towards a specific type of music for example they have made this for people who enjoy house music or are curious about this version as they have enjoyed the original song
Meaning -  What does the product convey in terms of meaning, does it seek to influence or engage the listener in thought.
When a listener first hears this it causes them to be intrigued as they have probably heard the original song so this newer version is something that is almost reinventing the song itself for the listener sparking a curiosity and makes them ask several questions
whats been changed?
will any of this be familiar to me?
whats effects have been used?
Genre -  What genre does it belong to?  How can you tell?
This comes under house music remix. You can tell this as it has took an original song by Coldplay and they have turned it into a remix they have achieved this by adding effects and changing the specific order of the track itself
Target audience -  Who are the targeted audience? What demographic do they come under? What does any RAJAR data tell us about this group?
this appears to be aimed at teenagers or people in their early 20s i would say this because it is a fairly new genre of music and may not appeal to an older generation who have already fully developed their taste in music and specific genres. This is quite a clever media product to produce as it can attract two types of people. People that enjoy house music and those that enjoy the original song itself and are curious to hear some kind of remix, and want to see what has been changed almost to compare the two versions of the songs.
Frequency -  How often is this audio product available/updated? What is significant about that frequency.
This audio product is never really updated but there are many remixes of this song available online the reason as to why it is not updated is because as soon as a song it is released it is open for public consumption it would not makes sense to update the original but maybe make a sequel to it if you want to add something else to it or alter it in any way this would be good for someone that enjoys your version of the song and are interested in more of your work again this gives them a chance to contrast your work.
Production process -  Where and how is the product produced? How is it made available for consumption?
This particular song is available on soundcloud like a lot of remixes or original songs

Area of research:
Notes: Artie Lange too fat to fish audio book
Purpose – What is the purpose of this audio product? Does it entertain, inform, instruct? How do you know it is for this purpose?
This audio book is supposed to entertain an audience and is also supposed to inform the audience about Artie Lange’s life as it is full of stories from his days as a young infant to a fully grown adult who is in the world of comedy
Form & Style – What form does the product take (podcast, audiobook, audio manual etc. What style is employed? Conversational, formal, informal etc.
This is an audiobook, this was also released as a hard cover book and also a paperback but the audio-book is the audio form. This audio book starts off with Artie Lange reading the book to you which creates quite a personal feel like he is reading to you. But due to his drug addiction as he explains around a quarter of the way through the book he has to leave due to his heroin addiction.
Content -  What is in this audio product, what does it deliver to its audience.
This was released to give the audience that are interested in reading the book another option to consume the book. This may be more popular to a demographic that doesn't really read or buy or read books but can happily listen to something and are interested in the authors life.
Meaning -  What does the product convey in terms of meaning, does it seek to influence or engage the listener in thought.
The meaning or goal for this is to engage the audience to give them the vision that the reader is talking to you not just reading a book in a monotone voice
Genre -  What genre does it belong to?  How can you tell?
This is meant to be a book with humour in it with personal memoirs told within it. You can tell this as he is telling stories from his life but also adds in a few humorous lines to keep the audience engaged
Target audience -  Who are the targeted audience? What demographic do they come under? What does any RAJAR data tell us about this group?
People whom are interested in Artie Lange and his life. I would say the target demographic for this would be adults between 22-35

Frequency -  How often is this audio product available/updated? What is significant about that frequency.
This was released in 2008 and has not been updated i am sure there are other versions of the audio book people have made and released online
Production process -  Where and how is the product produced? How is it made available for consumption?
I found a version of this on YouTube in several different parts

Comparison
The comparison between an audio book and a song is quite drastic for this one I have chosen to look at content specifically. Which I am sure you can imagine how big the difference is based on the concept alone. An audio book is giving the audience an alternative option to consume a book in a different manner as opposed to simply reading. A remix of a song on the other hand contains music that the audience has already heard but it is presented in a different way. But the music can be oriented to people that enjoy different genres.

LO1 - Analysis of audio media products

Introduction

This report is going to be about the analysis of different audio and media products, and how they can be compared. I will be analyzing and comparing the purpose, the form and style, the content, the meaning, the genre, the target audience, the frequency and the production process. The selection of audio products I am going to be analyzing and comparing using the previous key points I have previously mentioned are going to include the following; a music remix, an audio book, a podcast, a commentary as well as a live broadcast. The Audio Media Products I chose to analyse were the following:

Coldplay - Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix) - https://soundcloud.com/unlikepluto/coldplay-clocks-unlike-pluto

The Whole F'n Show - http://kevinscampoli.com/category/the-whole-fn-show/

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish - http://www.amazon.com/Too-Fat-to-Fish/dp/B001L4EENS

Huw Stephens Podcast - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02nrvzr/episodes/downloads

Purpose

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

The music remix I chose to analyze was Coldplay - Clocks (Unlike Pluto remix) the purpose of this product is to engage the audience and get them absorbed into the different sounds that are being made by the audio product and to keep the audience engaged for the three minutes twenty six seconds it runs for. In order to get some form of following for other remixes of songs they have done and to potentially make a living off it.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

Now compared to the audio book I did which was, Artie Lange - Too Fat to Fish, they both serve very different purposes one is to engage the audience for a very short amount of time and is to gain an audience. The audio books purpose is to generate more money for the author and publisher. And is made to engage the audience for a long period of time which lasts for over 7 hours which would obviously be broken down to several parts for most of the people listening.

The Whole F'n Show

One of the two podcast I chose was The Whole Fucking Show hosted by Kevin Scampoli and Ryan Van Vleet the purpose of this is to make engage with the audience on a fairly serious level and to make them laugh and to be entertained for a long fairly long period of time.

Huw Stephens Podcast

The other podcast I chose to do was the Huw Stephens podcast the purpose of this is to educate an audience on new music that is being released by artists that are fairly unknown and want some exposure I’m not sure if they have to pay to get their song on the air but I’m fairly sure this is a good way to generate some money another way money has been made off this is the adverts at the start at the podcast.

Form and style

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

Now on the complete opposite end of the scale is the Coldplay-Clocks (Unlike Pluto remix) which has a far from personal feel to it. This has really loud upbeat sounds that sound like they were designed to be played in some kind of stadium to reach a lot of different people so they can all share this "experience" together. Now a lot of music does have a personal feel to it to engage the listener and interest them. The style of this remix comes under the house remix genre of music. Which is the type of music you expect to hear at a party. This file is available to download as an mp3 file to allow the user to download it whenever they like. This isn't the highest quality for an audio download as that is a WAV file which has a far more richer sound to a listener.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

The form of the Too Fat To Fish I found and used was a YouTube video in several different parts, which is very accusable to the audience, that want to do this. Hard copies of this are also available to buy off amazon as well as mp3 files which users may prefer as these are less easy to break and are easier to carry around on many different devices as well as to copy. This is also available for consumption via a hardback book as well as a paperback. The purpose of this comes across as very informal as it is Artie Lange who is reading to you throughout most of the audiobook (even though he has to leaves halfway through to go to rehab), this gives the audiobook quite a relaxed feel to it for the main audience as they will be familiar with his voice as he was on the radio for a long time. But also due to the fact he wrote this book himself, which also gives it a very relaxed feel so it isn’t like he is reading from a generic manufactured script, but something he made himself that he cares about.
The fact he is reading to you, this listener . Also gives this audio product quite a personal feel to it which a lot of the listeners probably like and enjoy. The format for this would be an MP3 format, which is a relatively quick file to download compared to a WAV file.

The Whole F'n Show

The Whole F'n Show is a conversational podcast between the two hosts,  that comes across in a fairly  informal way in terms of the language they use but maintains a standard of engaging the audience with a lot of quick humor and fast paced convocation. You can tell it is in an informal style due to the fact that they will use obscenities, and talk about taboo topics. Which is something that has a mass appeal. This is available to download as an MP3 file which is a reason as to why people prefer

Huw Stephens Podcast

The BBC Radio One Huw Stephens podcast is the polar opposite when it comes to podcast instead of a conversation between two people it is generally him saying minimal words and focusing on the music he will be playing and the artists that have made it this gives the listener more facts on one specific topic which is unknown music. This mainly relies on the music that is being played rather than the host. The Huw Stephens podcast is presented in a more serious light compared to TWFS as they both have different goals in the ways they want to engage the audience. This is also a Podcast and is therefor available for MP3 Download.

Meaning

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

When a listener first hears the Clocks remix it causes them to be intrigued as they have probably heard the original song so this newer version is something that is almost reinventing the song itself for the listener sparking a curiosity within the audience and makes them ask several questions
What’s been changed? Will any of this be familiar to me? what’s effects have been used? And after they have heard it the goal is for the creator to hook the audience in whether it’s to re listen the song or to see what other remixes they have made.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

Now the meaning for Too fat to fish is completely different. The meaning or goal for this is to engage the audience to give them the vision that the reader is talking to you not just random person reading the book in a monotone voice. The idea for this should be to make the reader feel relaxed and comfortable.

The Whole F'n Show

TWFS gives the audience a chance to escape their regular life by focusing on the lives of the two main hosts in a humorous way but in an equally as serious light as a lot of their problems in life can be relate-able and the humor comes from the obscure problems that they may face each week.

Huw Stephens Podcast

The Huw Stephens podcast is very different I think this is meant to try and open up the audience’s eyes and to show them that hey have been force-fed specific type of songs that get a lot of play on the radio and this is to expose the audience to music that isn't "radio friendly".

Content

Now the content for each audio product obviously varies as they are all very different

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

This remix delivers an alternative version to a song that already exists they Taylor it towards a specific type of music for example they have made this for people who enjoy house music or are curious about this version as they have enjoyed the original song. This has the main singing from the original voice and the same piano riff with the same drums but it changes  lot of the audio and amplifies certain sounds and add in some new sounds so it fits into the house music genre as the regular song does not do that.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

Too Fat to Fish This is meant to be a book with humour in it with personal memoirs told within it. You can tell this as he is telling stories from his life but also adds in a few humorous lines to keep the audience engaged and to keep up his persona/status as a standup comedian. This book
Has a lot of personal story's that he holds pretty close to him including the time he went to a baseball game finals and saw his team win with his father.

The Whole F'n Show

The content within TWFS is quite different compared to the others sure it is quite personal like the Artie Lange book. But this is a comedic discussion which has a lot of inside jokes and references a lot of people may not get the discussion started off as a wrestling podcast and grew quite a large
Niche audience before gradually transitioning away from the wrestling theme and into a more personal talk radio style discussion with different bits that could happen any week for example a live roast.

Huw Stephens Podcast

The Huw Stephens podcast is a show with a basic premise playing new music from unknown artists with him interjecting with a generic opinion and introducing the artist that is going to be played and the name of the chosen song. Which is a fairly basic structure for a show. and is something that a lot of people are familiar with when it comes to mainstream Radio shows.

Genre

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

The Coldplay - Clocks (Unlike Pluto remix) this comes under house music remix. You can tell this as it has took an original song by Coldplay and they have turned it into a remix they have achieved this by adding effects and changing the specific order of the track itself.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

Artie Lange too fat to fish is also meant to make the audience laugh as well as address things that have happened in his life he does this by making comparisons between things that have happened within this personal life with humorous things

The Whole F'n Show

The genre of The Whole fucking Show is a comedy discussion you can tell this as the interaction between the two hosts is very humorous with a lot of quick witted jokes within this to keep the audience engaged and give them a reason to laugh to this.

Huw Stephens Podcast

The genre for Huw Stephens podcast is partly educational as it shows the audience new music that they would have never heard this also isn't limited to one genre of music so it can't be narrowed down as a variety of songs are played on this anything from classical to rap.

Target audience

Coldplay Clocks (Unlike Pluto Remix)

The Coldplay remix appears to be aimed at teenagers or people in their early 20s I would say this because it is a fairly new genre of music and may not appeal to an older generation who have already fully developed their taste in music and specific genres. This is quite a clever media product to produce as it can attract two types of people. People that enjoy house music and those that enjoy the original song itself and are curious to hear some kind of remix, and want to see what has been changed almost to compare the two versions of the songs.

Artie Lange Too Fat to Fish

For too fat to fish the intended audience are People whom are interested in Artie Lange and his life. I would say the target demographic for this would be a adult between 22-35 and not for a younger child as there are quite a lot of bad language used within this.

The Whole F'n Show

The Target audience for this audio media product is an ABC1 Demographic as it can appeal to a vast amount of people who enjoy a crude style of humour. I would say that the primary audience for this are between the ages of 15 to 25 due to the style that this is presented in which is pretty informal. And doesn't serve a vital purpose, besides entertaining people.

Huw Stephens Podcast

This podcast is aimed towards a fairly young audience as it is aimed towards people interested in new music, and I believe older people have already established their music taste. Therefor making it almost pointless in them looking for different music, outside genres they don't really like. I would say that this is aimed towards people between the ages of 15 to 22.
